Telling stories of togetherness across borders
Simone Turkmani-Kofoed

About me
My art is inspired by the stories I carry, both from my own experiences and the experiences of others. As a psychology student, I was drawn into the crossroads between cognition and philosophy. It went by many names – distributed cognition, extended cognition, integrated cognition. All drawing on the idea that our brains are not bounded to our bodies. Our skull is not an impenetrable prison. Quite the contrary, our brains disperse, connect, outsource and integrate with our environment. We leave traces of our thoughts through actions, and the actions of others create new pathways in our neural circuitry. Memory is not confined to the hippocampus, but can be found in our books, phones and most importantly the culture, traditions and rituals that we inherit, mould and pass on. The connections, combinations and evolutions that are created through cultural encounters are at the root of what I try to illustrate and express in my art.
